What did you do directly after school? Studies, travel, living etc
After graduation, I moved to Sydney for a year to work full time at an insurance firm in order to save money to attend Musical Theatre school. While I was there, amidst working, I did some courses at Sydney Theatre School and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In this year, I also travelled to New York and Los Angeles.
If applicable, what did you study at University and graduation news etc
In 2019, I moved back to Brisbane to study at the Brisbane Academy of Musical Theatre, where I completed a Certificate IV and Diploma of Musical Theatre. In 2020, I also completed a year of intensive practical theatre training through BAMT’s Performance Course, through which I had the opportunity to work closely with some of Australia’s most renowned theatre creatives and some of Queensland’s most accredited voice teachers.
Again if applicable, What are you doing since graduation?
Since graduating, I have performed in lead/featuring roles in shows such as ‘ALL SHOOK UP,’ ‘HEATHERS,’ and ‘GODSPELL.’ I was also incredibly honoured to originate the lead role of Olivia Monroe in the world premiere of ‘MISFITS SCHOOL OF ARTS.’
I’ve also been developing and exploring music directing/theatre production. I have been an assistant music director on Harvest Rain’s youth productions of ‘HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2,' ‘LEGALLY BLONDE JR,’ and ‘PINOCCHIO.’ I am also currently a production/music assistant for BAMT’s production of ’FOOTLOOSE.’
After auditioning against approximately 300 other performers around the country, I landed a very exciting role, performing in the national tour of ‘WE WILL ROCK YOU - THE ARENA EXPERIENCE,’ as a swing, covering for all 3 female leads: Oz, Scaramouche and Killer Queen.
What were your interests during school… sport, music etc and are you still involved?
In school, I was really all over the music and drama scene. I did all the school musicals and plays. It would be an understatement to say that sports were never my forte, so I just immersed myself in all the amazing music and drama opportunities I could. I’m so glad I did, because they are my career now!
What are your long-term goals now that you have graduated?
I do hope to maybe one day in the future open up my own vocal/musical theatre studio and just continue what I’m doing now: being surrounded by theatre in all aspects every single day and performing while getting paid to do so.
What challenges you faced post-school, and even post-uni?
Honestly, I haven’t faced that many ‘challenges,’ I’ve really thrived the past few years, however it was extremely tough being a performer during lockdown times. We had to cancel our show on opening night (which eventually got moved from March to July,) and then audition and rehearse for our next show on Zoom. We rehearsed online for about four weeks, that is learning choreography, vocals, staging - everything, just in our own living rooms. We then had to perform to reduced audiences for almost the rest of the year, and each time we performed a show, we’d just pray every night that we would come back tomorrow and get to keep doing our show. It was difficult and strange, but it made me appreciate how much I love getting to do what I do!
What are your highlights from school, teachers, programs etc?
My highlights are definitely being involved in all the school shows. I just have such fond memories of coming in every weekend and rehearsing and then getting out of school for a week for tech week. I also made the most friends during those shows. I always encourage kids if they are unsure on doing school shows to absolutely do them, even if they aren’t interested in performing or singing or dancing. They were so joyously fun and they helped me build a lot of confidence. I also loved my music, music extension and drama classes. Miss Mackie and Dr Bonar’s classes were my favourite and I looked forward to them every week. They also gave me a lot of skills that I use every day now.
