Maddie Panther
Class of 2014
Maddie is empowering the next generation as a Program Manager at BOP Industries, a job that sees her travel around Australia working with Primary and Secondary students on programs related to STEM, entrepreneurship, and industry. After completing a Business and Media & Communications degree at QUT, Maddie had plans to move overseas and work as an Au Pair in London for a year. When COVID altered her plans, Maddie returned to Australia and went back to university to pursue a Masters of Primary Teaching, a decision that has led her to a job she loves.
What did you do directly after school? Studies, travel, living etc
After school I moved to Brisbane to attend university and pursued a dual degree in Business and Media & Communications at QUT.
Did you study at the and graduation news etc?
Yes, after completing my dual degree, I planned to move overseas for a year and work as an Au Pair in London. However, when COVID hit, I decided to return to Australia. Upon my return, I went back to university and began pursuing a Masters of Teaching (Primary) degree.
What are you currently doing workwise?
Currently I have the pleasure of merging my three degrees into one profession! I am the Program Manager at an education company called BOP Industries. I travel around Australia, working with primary and high-school students on programs related to STEM, entrepreneurship, and industry. I absolutely love it and I'm glad I went back to retrain.
What are your long-term goals?
My long-term goals are to achieve financial freedom, continue doing what I love, and empower the next generation!
What were your interests during school… sport, music etc and are you still involved?
I was a bit of a chameleon at school! I was in the band and played clarinet and piano. I used to be a swimmer until middle school when I switched to water polo. I also participated in school musicals, such as Joseph in year 5 and Hairspray in year 12. Although I'm not involved in these extracurricular activities anymore, I still lead an active lifestyle.
What are your highlights from school, teachers, programs etc?
Some highlights from school include the entire Year 5 with Mr G, Drama with Miss Mackie, Geography with Mr Bartholemew, and Humanities with Mr Dick. I still remember our Year 6 Canberra trip and a music camp some of us attended in Year 8 or 9. However, the Geography trip with Mr Bart to K'agri (Fraser Island) was definitely a major highlight.
What challenges you faced post-school, and even post-uni (if applicable)?
After my first year of university, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. I moved back home to the Sunshine Coast for a year and underwent six months of treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation. Overcoming this challenge was one of the biggest hurdles in my life, but it forced me to grow and gain a new perspective. I'm grateful for the experience now.
Do you stay in touch with friends from school?
Yes! I am still very close to Brooke Finney, Ellie Blumel, and Nathan Dowrick. I recently had the honor of being a bridesmaid for Brooke, which was so lovely since we met in Year 1! I also keep up with what people are up to through social media, which helps me stay in the loop.
Have you visited the College in recent years and if so what are your thoughts on the new facilities (eg Learning Hub, Aquatic Centre)?
I had the opportunity to visit the college in 2022 during a program with the Year 9 students, and I was amazed at how much the school had changed! The facilities look incredible, I'm quite envious!
How did (if at all) COVID affected your work, study, plans?
COVID forced me to pivot and reconsider the path I was on. However, I can now see that everything happens for a reason, and I'm grateful for the choices I made when COVID first hit.
