Jack Buksh

Class of 2017

Opportunity. That’s what a scholarship for St Andrew’s meant for 2017 graduate Jack Buksh.

Jack was the first recipient of the Principal’s scholarship in 2013, which provides full remission of College fees for a worthy student who would otherwise not be able to afford a St Andrew’s education – a humbling experience he says he will forever be grateful for.

Jack now 23, reflects that not only did the scholarship provide him the opportunity to attend St Andrew’s, but also shaped the person he is today.

“It was an education I mightn’t have had otherwise… I count myself lucky to have received it, not everyone gets that chance,” he said.

“My time at St Andrew’s has shaped who I am today and where I’ve been able to go. The Principal’s Scholarship unlocked that opportunity for me, for which I am very grateful.”

During his time at the College, Jack ensured he made the most of every opportunity presented to him, including academic, music, debating and running the Kokoda trail among others.

“It was always a really tangible example for me of how lucky I was to be at St Andrew’s, with these opportunities engrained as such a core part of the educational journey,” Jack said of his involvement while at the College.

“I was taught by some of the best teachers out there, took part in a wide range of educational and extra curricular opportunities and played a small role in the College community.”

My time at St Andrew’s has shaped who I am today and where I’ve been able to go. The Principal’s Scholarship unlocked that opportunity for me, for which I am very grateful.

Relationships, personalised learning, culture and community - looking back, Jack recalls many of the values St Andrew’s still holds strong to this day, as his fondest memories and what sets St Andrew’s apart from any other school.

“The culture and vision of St Andrew’s is unique, with a very strong sense of community,” he said.

“There is value placed in not only the learning in the classroom, but also on the importance of contributing back to, and enriching the community you’re in.

“For me, I would say that it allowed me to broaden my perspective as I grew up and has influenced the direction I’ve taken since.

“You always knew that the staff had your back, and it gave a more personalised approach to your education. It has helped me become far more well-rounded – not just in the classroom, but as a person.”

Since graduating, Jack has continued to excel through university and into a career in politics, and is currently an adviser to Minister Lily D’Ambrosio – the Minister for Climate Action, Minister for Energy and Resources and Minister for the State Electricity Commission.
