Harry Mark

Class of 2016

Harry has continued to pursue a career in the photography field, with his keen interest in photography at school.

A move to Indonesia saw Harry start full-time work with Deus Ex Machina as a staff photographer and media manager after graduating. From there Harry took the leap and moved overseas by himself for four years, working as a freelance commercial photographer in Los Angeles.

Harry currently owns a production company between LA and Sydney which focuses on feature films and TV commercials. He also creative consults for Deus Ex Machina and sells prints in a Venice Beach gallery.

Since moving back to Australia during COVID, Harry has fallen back in love with the lifestyle and is enjoying being grounded and being set up in one place at a time. He hopes to continue working with like-minded people and loving the work he does!

What did you do directly after school? Studies, travel, living etc

A month or two after school I moved to Indonesia and started full-time work with Deus Ex Machina as a staff photographer and media manager. From there I started working as a freelance commercial photographer and moved to Los Angeles, California for a few years.

Did you study at University and graduation news etc?

No study after school for me, straight into work. I completed my OP and was accepted into university at UNSW but never ended up attending.

What are you currently doing work wise?

Currently I own a production company between LA and Sydney which focuses on feature films and TV commercials, I creative consult for Deus Ex Machina and sell prints in a gallery in Venice Beach, Los Angeles. I try to still squeeze in the odd commercial photography gigs also if the right job comes along.

What are your long-term goals?

Continue working with like minded individuals and enjoying what I’m doing. Hardly feels like work when you’re having fun.

What were your interests during school… sport, music etc and are you still involved?

I was very into photography while at school, lucky to have found work in that same field when I left.

What are your highlights from school, teachers, programs etc?

I enjoyed the freedom we were given in programs such as urban bound in Melbourne, and free periods in 11 & 12 in which we could leave campus. I felt as though these were a good representation of life outside of school and managing work loads.

What challenges you faced post-school, and even post-uni (if applicable)?

The path I chose moving overseas by myself for 4 years meant I didn’t have much of a safety net, however that was probably a good thing as it forces you to grow up very quickly.

Do you stay in touch with friends from school?

I have a few friends I’ve recently reconnected with after moving back to Australia that I was close with in high school. It has been really cool seeing what everyone has been up to.

Have you visited the College in recent years and if so what are your thoughts on the new facilities (eg Learning Hub, Aquatic Centre)?

I haven’t unfortunately! Admittedly I have not spent much time in Queensland since I graduated but will have to drop by.
