Emily McIntyre

Class of 2013

Vision scientist, with a Master of Optometry (with distinction), our Class of 2013 College captain Emily McIntyre is someone to watch - pun intended.

After graduating from St Andrew’s, Emily moved to Brisbane and studied podiatry at QUT for a year, before transferring into Optometry. Emily has recently graduated with her Masters of Optometry and has landed a great job this year.

Looking back on her time at St Andrew's, she fondly recalls Mr Spring's stories in tutor groups and has continued her love of sport into her life after school.

What you did directly after school?

After school I spent the summer at home enjoying the beach and then moved to Brisbane and studied podiatry at QUT for a year, before transferring in to Optometry. The first few years were pretty challenging and not particularly enjoyable, but I pushed through and ended up loving it.

What you have studied at University?

I am about to graduate from my Master of Optometry at QUT.

What you are doing after graduation?

I have been lucky enough to find a full time job in Brisbane and will be working at Redlands Eye Specialists next year with some fantastic Ophthalmologists.

You loved sport at school... are you still involved in sport?

Yes I am. I moved my focus to netball when I left school and have been playing for QUT since my first year. I am currently playing in the Queensland Premier League competition. I also played water polo for QUT for a few years and am looking to start playing again.

What are you long-term goals?

I definitely want to travel (although unlikely in the near future) as I haven’t had much of an opportunity to yet. Career wise I haven’t really figured that out yet, but I’m sure I will.

What challenges you faced post-school?

While I have always enjoyed throwing myself into every opportunity given to me, I definitely found it difficult to juggle multiple jobs, study, a social life, sport and daily household chores. Your prioritising skills are really put to the test.

What are your highlights from school?

I would have to say the many sporting carnivals, Mr Spring’s stories in tutor group and the two international trips that I was able to go on - New York and Indonesia.

Do you stay in touch with friends from school?

Most definitely! I am still in contact with quite a few friends from SAAC and even lived with Austin Wenke and Josh Pickstone a couple of years ago.

Have you seen the new facilities eg: Learning Hub and Aquatic Centre?

I have, I couldn’t help myself but have a swim when the pool opened and I had my 5 year reunion at the learning hub. I wish I had both facilities when I was at school!
