Alana Tapley
Class of 2009
From a member of the self-proclaimed 'Maths Wizards Gang' at school, Alana is now enjoying working in the fast-paced nature of the trading floor in an international finance hub and making the most of living in Hong Kong.
Completing a Bachelor of Economic/Bachelor of Commerce at UQ, Alana then started a graduate role with Citi in Sydney while also doing her Masters of Applied Finance at Macquarie University.
After six years working at Citi in Sydney, Alana made the move to Hong Kong with Macquarie earlier this year to pursue a lifetime goal, where she is now a Vice President in Institutional Equity Sales, covering hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds and other institutional investors across Asia that invest in Australia.
What are your highlights from school, teachers, programs etc?
Highlights that have stuck with me include Mr Rudkin’s “Life’s Good” slogan, the self-proclaimed “Maths Wizards Gang” (Gianni, Emma, Leah & myself), fun physics classes with Mr Koy and Mr Elley’s mentorship and guidance.
What were your interests during school… sport, music etc and are you still involved?
Since school I have continued to play netball, and I am now a member of the HK Valley RFC team!
What challenges you faced post-school, and even post-uni?
COVID definitely threw a spanner in the works, having originally planned to move to London in March 2020. It was a goal of mine to work overseas in my 20’s and I was very lucky to have had this opportunity come up with Macquarie (and in a country like HK where COVID is under control). While it is a challenge moving country in a pandemic, it has been totally worth it and I’m absolutely loving HK!
What did you study at University and graduation news etc
Bachelor of Economics / Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Queensland, graduating in 2014 on the Dean’s Honour Roll.
What did you do directly after school? Studies, travel, living etc / What have you been doing since graduation?
After school, I moved straight to Brisbane to study at UQ. I also did an exchange semester at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada. After taking a few months off to travel around Europe after graduation, I then moved to Sydney to start a graduate role with Citi in the Global Markets division (having interned there during uni). I also did my Masters of Applied Finance at Macquarie University while working full time, graduating in 2019. My passion for travelling to off the beaten track destinations has continued, including to Oman, Laos, and Bolivia/Peru (this trip with Emma Schimke from school!). I’ve also had some amazing opportunities to travel with my job when I was at Citi, including to New York, London, China and Hong Kong. After 6 years at Citi in Sydney, I made the move to HK with Macquarie in February. I am currently a Vice President in Institutional Equity Sales, covering hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds and other institutional investors across Asia that invest in Australia. I love the fast paced nature of the trading floor and working in an international finance hub which was always a goal of mine!
What are your long-term goals?
I still have plenty of exploring left to do and destinations on my bucket list I want to tick off. But for now I’m making the most of living in HK and am looking forward to travelling again.
