Year 7 and 9 explore new experiences in Science

Year 7 Science – Heart Dissections

As part of a Body Systems Unit the Year 7 students have been learning about the Circulatory System and this week examined the structure of a heart in their first dissection! Students were growth minded and took risk in their learning by trying something new, unknown and sometimes uncomfortable. All the students enjoyed the experience though and are learning about dissection skills, lab safety and scientific drawings.

Year 9 Science – Owl Pellets

As part of an Evolution unit students have been dissecting real Owl Pellets. Owls are unable to digest the fur and bone of their prey, which they usually swallow whole. The indigestible parts are regurgitated (coughed up through the beak) in the form of an owl pellet. These pellets can be analysed to determine their diet and animal distribution in the area, Students have identified real bone fragments and reconstructed these into identifiable species.
